Miniature Thongs – Detail 416 November 7th, 2007

Miniature Thongs BroochI made this miniature quilt (1.5 x 1.8 inches) for my son in 2002 when he was traveling overseas and I wanted to make him something, small enough to carry easily, that would remind him of home.

I didn’t get a good photo of it at the time, so when I was visiting him and noticed that he still has it on display in his room, I took the opportunity to take a photo…It also inspired me to pull out the holiday buzy box and make thong brooches (see holiday snaps day 11), as memories of Magnetic Island for some people that I met up there.

TAST Week 44 – Detail 415 November 6th, 2007

TAST Week 44

This seam is the TAST week 44 – Zig Zag Spanish Knotted stitch, I used a varigated stranded cotton thread and like the gentle curve it forms.

Ribbon Bow – Detail 414 November 5th, 2007

Pink bow with heart charmFor this Ribbon Bow I put 2 colours of silk ribbon together, then treated them as a single ribbon, to get the colour change as I flipped it from side to side…As it will be the only embellishment in the top right corner I added a heart to the bow to draw the eye.

A this seam will also be under the the bow I have chosen another neutral stitch…Zig-Zag Chain stitch with only a slight zig-zag.

TAST Week 42 – Detail 412 November 2nd, 2007

Cretan Stitch with added twisted satin stitch

I am going to put a bow on the bottom part of this seam and as I want the bow to be the focal point I wanted a neutral seam behind it, I have chosen a thread that is a close match to one of the fabrics and started doing a Cretan Stitch after taking the first couple of stitches I realized that I could make a Twisted Satin Chain (TAST week 42) on each stitch, with the thread that I was useing the extra bulk of the Twisted Satin doesn’t make much of a visual difference to the Cretan Stitch but it has given it a nice texture.

More TAST Week 41 Lace Border Stitch – Detail 411 November 1st, 2007

Lace Border Stitch

In progress overviewFor this seam I have used the Lace Border Stitch and flipped it from side to side…I was going to bead it as I did with detail 410 but when I looked at the seam in contents of the whole the area it is located is the most likely area for me to put a bead trail and to have beads on this seam as well would congest the background of the bead trail so I have left my options open and not used beads.

TAST Week 41 Lace Border Stitch – Details 409 and 410 October 30th, 2007

Today I moved onto tast week 41 Lace Border Stitch.

I Started by doing a row of the basic stitch to get a feel for it…A few stitches into the seam I realized that I was making each stitch slightly wider, to correct it I then made each stitch slightly smaller than the last so that the seam took on a nice curved shape.

On the next seam I added a bead before doing the twisted chain and then went back through the bead and continued the stitch.

I blogged day 3 of my holiday.

TAST Week 40 Linked Double Chain (detail 408) and My Birthday October 29th, 2007

I carried the pink project kit north and carried it home again without doing a stitch on it but I did use some of the needles and threads for small repair jobs and I showed it to my sister in law so that it is no longer a secret…and even though I didn’t do any stitching on it while I was away having it all together meant that today, when I wanted to start on the missed TAST Stitches, everything was there ready to go so I just had to pick it up and start stitching…I have used a cotton perle thread for the first missed stitch, Linked Double Chain.

Today is my birthday which I have spent as a quit day, going through photos and blogging day 2 of my holiday, a visit from my sister and neices and talking on the phone as my mum, brothers and friends rang throughout the day.

Holiday Snaps Day 24 October 25th, 2007

I looked after my nephew (age 6) this afternoon so that my brother could do a few hours work…We started playing UNO when my brother left, there was no rules in the box so I had to remember how to play (I couldn’t remember how many cards toto deal so we had a different number each game) then teach him how to play so it took us a while to get started but once we had the game worked out we had a lot of fun, I was impressed with him counting the cards as he dealt, firstly in English then in Italian which he is learning at school and then in German, his mothers native language and we chatted on about all sorts of things…We did have fun and we were still playing when my brother got home 3 1/2 hours later, I was surprised that so much time had elapsed because I wouldn’t have thought that I could sit on the floor for so long with out getting very uncomfortable.

I didn’t actual take any photos today so for tonights holiday image I have taken a photo of the things that I bought for my crazy quilting…

Holiday Snaps Day 11 October 12th, 2007

running repairI decided to stitch some miniature thongs for the English backpackers and Sam’s flat mate K…Having decided that I would like to stitch the miniature thongs I went looking for something to stitch the thongs onto, I found in my buzy box a business card sized piece of tymtax (sp?? thick, stiff interfacing), I cut it into 3 pieces and stitched safty pins onto the back, I originally intended to do just the thongs but the white background looked boring so K painted the backgrounds while I cut the rubber from the side of a thong…

While the PVA Glue that I used to seal the colour was drying we went to the beach…I took needle and thread to the beach to do a running repair on the pocket of Sam’s work apron so that he could wear it to work this afternoon…

While at the beach we collected a few tiny shells and a pinch of sand to use on the Thong Brooches… and together with a few stitches of green thread to make the seaweed 3 dimensional they formed a perfect little background for the thongs…I photographed them on the thong that I cut the rubber from.

View from Magnetic Island Forts

Corner of Magnetic Island FortThis afternoon while Sam and K where at work I went on a 2 hour walk, with the English girls, up the hill to the old Forts, the photo above is the view from one of the forts with the other fort on the left…the photo on the right is a detail of the corner of one of the forts…

It had been a long but very relaxed day and we finished it with a friendly game of pool.
